If you're totally or even highly visually impaired, How much do you know about the "looks" of the people or things around you? For example, do you know or place significance on the eye color, hair color, or other looks on other people? Especially If you can't see them, do you make a point of knowing what color important things are? For example, the color of the family car, your computer bag, and other important items like that?

After recently talking to a friend who told me she doesn't really remember or know of the looks of her family, friends, and she really doesn't pay much attention to the color of things in general, I began to wonder about this. In other words, If someone asked you, "Describe what your brother--or friend--or parent, or spouse--or lunchbox, or suitcase--looks like [In relation to eye and hair color, distinctive features, ETC], would you be able to answer? Apparently, a lot of blind people can't--and I don't really see it as their fault, necesarily, but I think it's important to know anyway.

if I buy a back pack, or shirt I like, I'll ask what color it is. but yeah, it depends on the object, whether I care or not.
same with people. Most, I don't know what their hair color is, including family.
but I know hair and eye colors of the most random people.

so, it just depends on how important the object is. some things I'll ask, some I won't. for instance, I have no idea what color my computer is, and don't care.
but I know my stuffed animal is green. *shrugs.

agreed with Cala. I tend to ask if It's clothes or a family car, carpets a pet etc, but if it's something stupid and insignificant, I don't bother.

No, not really, unless I'd need to know for identification purposes, such as luggage. I don't remember at all what color is or "looks" like, so it honestly doesn't enter my head to wonder most of the time. As for what people look like, the closest I get is knowing somewhat what someones height is in comparison to mine, and some of their body build if I've taken them sighted guide or something of the sort.

I used to have good vision so I know the hair and eye color of people I've known for a long time. But I don't know these things about people I've met more recently. And for the most part it doesn't really matter to me. Same with famous people like actors and singers. The ones who were popular when I could see, I still picture them looking the way they did then even though they would be older and look different now. I have a couple friends who enjoy describing people to me, so I know what some people I have recently met look like, but I don't make it a point to find out. However, I still have very vivid memories of colors and know what colors I like when buying clothes or other items. And I think I still have a good sense of what colors go well together. And I also care about colors of less important objects just because I always enjoyed colors when I could see.

hmm, well, that is an interesting topic. I don't really think about it as much except when matching clothes. I think of hair color only when people bring it up. The colors I know are one's I saw back when I could see good growing up all most 10 years ago. It really doesn't matter but there are some colors I just hate to wear. I didn't like them when I could see them and I probably wouldn't now.

orange, yellow, pink duh. lol

Shawn, what you said about colors reminded me of something. When I could see I had a friend who had a very fair complexion and light colored hair like I do. I used to think she looked horrible whenever she wore black, so I said I would never wear black. But now that I can't see I occasionally wear black, and I always get told I look great in it. But whenever I picture this other person in my mind, I remember thinking she looked like death warmed over. So I still don't wear black very often. I tend to stick to colors I liked when I could see and knew I looked good in.

I never had really good vision, but I did have some color perception. This sounds like the makings of a really bad joke, but I forget what some of my colors look like. My favorite color was blue, but I can't remember why. Go figure.

For me it's kinda random. I sometims ask friends what differnt people loo like, and when I buy clothes and things I ask about those as well, but I usually forget since I have so many clothes. I've neer seen, so this stuff just doesn't matter to me that much really.
